Saw the advertisement on television promoting the bundle deal of three dishes by Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights (豚香福建馆). Thought that it was a good deal plus the fact I have not been to the place yet. Dragged mum along to Northpoint City mall on a hot weekend afternoon since I couldn't possibly finish the set meal alone.

Upon seated, the wait staff informed us that you can scan the QR code on the table to access the digital menu plus order. Placed ordered for the Bundled Deal (S$28.80++) consisting of the Signature Hokkien Mee, Iberico Pork Fried Beancurd and White Pepper Collagen Pig Stomach Soup.

The Signature Hokkien Mee (招牌黑猪福建面) came with a mixture of yellow noodles and bee hoon (rice vermicelli) served over banana leaf. At a glance, one can spot prawns, squids, matchstick sized pork and plenty of deep-fried pork lards soaked in the gravy. While the overall taste is decent, the flavour profile of the prawn is not pronounced enough like they didn’t use enough prawn heads and shells to render out the prawn oil.

Both of us enjoyed the Iberico Pork Fried Beancurd (酥炸黑猪酿卜) a lot. The minced pork is well seasoned and stuffed into fried bean curd puffs before going into hot oil. The puff outside is crispy while the meat is juicy. Remember to dip the whole thing into the sweet thick sauce for the complete package before devouring it.

Was reminded that the White Pepper Collagen Pig Stomach Soup (胶原胡椒猪肚汤) is hot when it was served. It came with thinly sliced Iberico pork, tripe, fish maw and garnished with coriander and chilli. Taking a sip of the soup, I can detect the stickiness of the collagen on the lips and the spiciness of peppercorns though I would have enjoyed a stronger peppery taste. Both the tripe and pork were tender enough but the fish maw needs a longer cooking time to get to the softer texture I preferred.

While I enjoyed the meal, mum is a lot harder to please. She claims that the noodles look like last night leftover and other than the fried bean curd, I don’t think she like the other two dishes.

For all Cypher’s worth, he’s probably rich af. Like no joke, this man is LOAADED. Probably second richest to Chamber (and Chamber must have acknowledged it, and they go on to compete with one another to see how much they would invest and win). He did grow up poor so he probably have saved a lot of money back then and work really hard by doing.. AHEM AHEM, legal marketing 😀👍 his bank has far exceed from a million bucks already. He never spends it on himself however but when he married Nora, he wanted to spend it all on her. Yet the humble and kind queen always refuses so he never persisted although HE wish he does (he wishes he could have spent it all on her)

After her death, he never used the money at all and rarely have ever taken something out of it, he created multiple bank accounts just so he couldn’t use it until he joined Valorant. The first is a group of words with a combination of u + yc:

This might be related to the status of /ui/ as a diphthong in Mando’a & could be a piece of evidence against it. What do I mean? Well, every instance of ⟨uy⟩ in the dictionary, Traviss breaks up in two syllables /u.i/. Could be there’s no diphthong /ui/ in Mando’a? However, I think it’s more likely this is because Traviss gives the pronunciations with an English orthography (i.e. how an English speaking reader would know to pronounce the words), and there’s no diphthong /ui/ in English, so in order to represent those sounds in English, they have to be broken up in separate syllables.

I also think the long /uː/ in buy’ce etc. is likely simply an elision: try going slowly from /u/ to /i/ to /ʃ/, and you’ll notice it’s easier to slip directly from /u/ to /ʃ/. I would generalise it as the diphthong /ʊɪ/ being realised as /uː/ before palatal consonants (at least; maybe others as well).

and:

buyacir [boo-ya-SHEER] /bʊ.ja.ˈʃiɾ/

Which has no excuse for being irregular except for influence on its spelling from buy’ce, so you could alternatively spell it as buyacyir or pronounce it as /bʊ.ja.ˈsiɾ/ (either would be regular).

The other exception to the rule is:

acyk [AH-seek]

The rule for this could be formulated as “if y is the only vowel in a syllable, it’s pronounced as /i/ and the pronunciation of c follows that.” Except for…

tracyn [trah-SHEEN]

Which itself could be analysed as a combination of the above rules: y as an only vowel gets pronounced as /i/, but the consonant in cy is still pronounced as /ʃ/ (in which case it would be acyk that is irregular instead).

It’s the derivations that appear irregular:

Tracinya is plainly a derivation of tracyn, just spelled with an i instead of y. Interestingly, in Harlin’s Mando’a tracyn is pronounced as /tra.ʃin/ and tracinya as /tra.sin.ja/. So perhaps it’s acyk which should be pronounced as /a.ʃik/?

I’ve chosen to adjust the pronunciation of the other two to conform to the rule of pronouncing cy as /ʃ/: /tɾa.ˈʃaːt/ & /tɾa.ˈʃaɾ/.

And then:

yacur [YAH-soor]

Idek? I have do idea where this one comes from.

And:

Coruscanta [KOH-roo-SAHN-ta]

which is a loanword and doesn’t count. Although I’d suspect that “Corusanta” might be a fairly common misspelling among native speakers.

Explanation

So why is it pronounced like that? The explanation is something called palatalisation, which is the same reason why c in Latinate words is sometimes pronounced as /k/ and sometimes as /s/.

In very simple terms, the high front vowels and the semivowel /j/ are pronounced such that the tongue is at or very nearly the palatal position. So they tend to pull the preceding consonants to the palatal place of articulation (instead of whichever place of articulation they used to be pronounced at).

So in Mando’a:

c → k

c + high front vowel /i e/ → /s/

c + semivowel /j/ → /ʃ/

Not sure if /k/ is the original value of ⟨c⟩ since this rule doesn’t seem to apply to ⟨k⟩. Maybe ⟨c⟩ had originally another value, which has later changed into /k/?

The internal protectors. Omegas take care of the inner problems of the pack such as (but not limited to) emotional/instinctual issues, infighting, reproduction, and monitoring pack health and mating cycles. They also make major decisions in the pups' education. Stereotyped as weak and emotional.

Betas have traits of alphas and omegas as well as their own characteristics, and because of this, usually pack responsibilities vary incredibly from beta to beta. Stereotyped as dull and useless.

Darkstone Family dinner✨

With the family growing concerned at Kodiak's uncharacteristic absence, the kids chatter amongst themselves. Luna and Kai exchange worried glances to each other, wondering if they should leave to find their father - Sadie sits in silence, overwhelmed by all the new sights and sounds, and worried for his papa.

Just as Kai opens his mouth to speak up, Kodiak busts through the dining hall doors, with Cinna following close behind.

"I had something important come up last minute-! We're here now haha- I brought a few ponies, I hope that's alright-"

Luna and Kai step closer to greet their father. Luna at seeing Cinna, lights up, and speaks up first. Kai, at the thought of having even more ponies join them for dinner, mini-panics but quickly regains composure.

Kai: You didn't message any of us, we were getting worried! Who's the other guest..?

Kodiak, still catching his breath from running, looks behind himself and notices that Sagi lagged behind.

"Oh he's...Well he's also family, just. Maybe not someone you'd expect to be..."

Sagi walks in at a leisurely pace, unsure of what to make of this whole situation. He stands before the rest of the Darkstones (and Kokoros), waiting for their approval or dismissal.

Sadie, coming back to reality, lights up at seeing a new person to meet. He runs over and greets Sagi. [Night]Shade follows close to Sadie's side to bodygaurd, having heard stories of Sagi through the group grapevine.
